COD Lifecycle — Cash on Delivery
Cash on Delivery (COD) is how most e-commerce works in Bangladesh — an estimated 80–90% of online orders are paid this way. The customer doesn't pay when they order; they pay the courier in cash when the package actually arrives. That one fact shapes everything else in this guide: your money doesn't arrive when the sale happens, it arrives later, in someone else's hands first.

The COD Journey
A COD order moves through five real-world steps before you actually have the money in hand:
- Order placed — A customer messages you or checks out on your store and agrees to pay cash on delivery. No money has moved yet.
- Confirmed and prepared — You (or your team) verify the order is real and the address is correct, then pack it.
- Dispatched to courier — The package goes out with one of your couriers — Pathao, Steadfast, RedX, or Paperfly — with instructions on how much cash to collect from the customer.
- Delivered and cash collected — The courier hands over the package and collects the cash on the spot. This is the moment the sale becomes real money — just not real money for you yet.
- Remitted to you — The courier pays that cash to you on its own schedule. Every courier has a different remittance rhythm, and Omnikyo doesn't control it — a courier decides when it pays you, Omnikyo can only track where things stand.
That gap between step 4 and step 5 — cash collected by the courier but not yet in your account — is the single most important thing to understand about running a COD business. It's why Omnikyo gives it a dedicated dashboard view, covered below.
Order Statuses in a COD Order
Every order — COD or otherwise — moves through a fixed set of statuses, and Omnikyo only allows the transitions that make sense for how a real order moves (see Order Management for the full status map). Two statuses matter specifically for COD:
| Status | Bangla | What it means for COD |
|---|---|---|
| Dispatched | প্রেরিত | The order — and the cash-collection instruction — is with the courier now. This is the "money with courier" stage. |
| Delivered | ডেলিভারি সম্পন্ন | The courier collected the cash from the customer. The sale is final, but the cash is still with the courier until it's remitted. |
| Return Pending | রিটার্ন প্রক্রিয়াধীন | The courier has picked the package back up — because the customer refused it or couldn't be reached — but it hasn't been formally closed out as a return yet. |
| Returned | ফেরত | The item is confirmed back with you. No cash was ever collected on it (unless it was a partial or paid return). |
An order can only reach Return Pending from Dispatched or Delivered, and Return Pending only ever resolves to Returned — it can't silently disappear or jump back into your active pipeline. This keeps the return trail visible instead of an order just quietly vanishing from view.
Cash in Flight — Where Is My Money?
Because COD money sits with a courier before it reaches you, the question "how much of my money is still out there, and is it actually coming back?" is normally a guess — checked by scrolling through orders one by one or calling the courier. Omnikyo's dashboard answers it directly with a Cash in Flight card that splits everything you're still owed into four buckets:
- With courier now — orders that are Dispatched but not yet Delivered. This cash is in transit; the courier is still holding the package and hasn't collected from the customer yet (or has collected but hasn't told Omnikyo).
- Awaiting [courier] payout — orders that are Delivered, meaning the courier already collected the cash from the customer, but hasn't yet reported paying it out to you. This is shown per courier, because couriers differ in how reliably they report this stage — a courier that doesn't report it at all is left out of this bucket rather than shown as zero, and is called out separately so you know its cash isn't being tracked here.
- Coming back as returns — orders that are Return Pending or Returned. This is money you were counting on that is now — or is about to be — reversed.
- Collected, last 30 days — cash actually confirmed collected in the recent trailing window, shown separately as a reality check against the buckets above.
The card totals the outstanding amount (with-courier + awaiting-payout + returns) as one headline number, so you can see at a glance how much of your revenue is still outside your hands, and a proportional bar shows how that total splits across the three risk buckets. This turns "is my money coming back?" from a feeling into an actual number you can watch move.
You'll find this card on the main dashboard, in the operational section below your date-range metrics — it deliberately isn't scoped to whatever date range you've picked elsewhere on the dashboard, because a parcel stuck with a courier from three weeks ago still needs your attention today.
Returns and RTO — the Biggest COD Risk
In COD selling, the single biggest financial risk isn't a bad product or a slow courier — it's a customer who refuses the package at the door or simply can't be reached when the courier arrives. This is commonly called RTO — Return to Origin (the package returns to where it came from instead of reaching the customer).
When that happens, the order moves to Return Pending while the courier brings the package back, and then to Returned once it's formally closed out. Unlike a normal return of a delivered product, an RTO order usually means:
- No cash was ever collected from the customer.
- You've already paid for packaging and, often, a courier fee for the failed delivery attempt.
- The inventory you set aside is now sitting back in your hands instead of sold.
This is why confirming an order properly, before it's dispatched, is the highest-leverage thing you can do in a COD business — every RTO avoided is real money and real time saved.
The RTO Shield — Delivery Track Record
To help you catch a likely RTO before it costs you anything, Omnikyo tracks each customer's real delivery history with each courier and turns it into a simple, color-coded badge:
| Badge | What it signals |
|---|---|
| Excellent | This customer reliably accepts delivery. |
| Good | Mostly reliable, occasional issue. |
| Average | Mixed history — worth a second look. |
| Bad | This customer has refused or missed delivery more than once. |
| Risky | A strong pattern of failed deliveries with this customer. |
You'll see this badge next to a customer's order — on the Orders page and inside an order's detail view — built from that customer's actual completed-vs-total delivery record with each courier they've ordered through. Hovering it shows the breakdown per courier, so if a customer has ordered through more than one courier, you can see whether the risk is with the customer or specific to one courier's coverage in their area.
This badge is not a fraud score and it never blocks an order automatically — Omnikyo doesn't stop you from shipping to anyone. It's a nudge: if you see Bad or Risky before dispatching, call the customer and confirm the order is genuinely wanted before you spend money packing and shipping it. That one phone call is usually far cheaper than an RTO.
Courier Remittance
Once a courier delivers your package and collects the cash, it owes that money to you. Each courier — Pathao, Steadfast, RedX, and Paperfly — settles with merchants on its own schedule and through its own process; this is entirely between you and the courier, and Omnikyo does not move money on your behalf or set the schedule.
What Omnikyo does is track the state of that money as far as each courier reports it: an order sitting in the "awaiting payout" bucket of Cash in Flight means the courier has confirmed delivery (and therefore collection) but hasn't yet reported the payout stage to you. Because couriers vary in how completely they report this, a courier that doesn't report remittance status at all is flagged separately in the Cash in Flight card rather than silently shown as zero — so you always know whether a number reflects reality or just a reporting gap.
For the actual transfer of funds, keep checking your courier's own merchant portal or statements — Omnikyo's job is to make sure you never lose track of which delivered orders you're still waiting to be paid for.
Pricing and COD
Omnikyo's pricing is built around the reality that a large share of COD orders don't end in a successful delivery.
Omnikyo is free to start — Tk 0 per month, no credit card required, no setup cost or per-seat fees. Omnikyo charges 0.9% to 2% of delivered orders only — nothing is charged on cancelled, returned, or undelivered orders. Cancel anytime.
In practice, this means an order that ends up Returned, Cancelled, or stuck as an RTO costs you nothing in Omnikyo fees — you only ever pay Omnikyo on the orders that actually convert into cash in your business. Given how common returns are in COD selling, this is a deliberate design choice, not a discount: it keeps Omnikyo's incentives aligned with actually getting your packages delivered, not just processed.
