What it is

The Catalog page has three sections: Categories, Collections, and Metafields. The Media page stores all your shop's photos and videos in one place.

  • Categories let you file each product into one group (for example, Oils, Clothing, Electronics). Shoppers browse by category.
  • Collections are custom groups of products (for example, Eid Sale, Gift Ideas, Bestsellers). You pick the products; shoppers see them grouped together.
  • Metafields are custom fields you define and then fill in on each product (for example, Material, Care instructions, Size guide).
  • Media is your library of photos and videos. Every product photo, your store logo, and ads all draw from one library.

How it works

Categories and collections are two different ways to group products. A product has one category. A product can be in many collections. Neither gathers sales data — they exist to help shoppers browse.

Metafields are like a spreadsheet column you create. You define what the column is called and what goes in it (text, number, date, color, etc.). Then you fill in that field on every product that needs it. Shoppers see pinned metafields on the product detail page.

Media is shared across your whole shop. A photo you upload for one product can be used for another. The library is sorted into folders (Products, Logo, Banners, etc.), but all files are visible together.

The parts

Categories section

A tree of product categories. Each category can have children (sub-categories). You can set an image and links to Meta and Google category IDs.

  • List: shows all categories indented by level, with product counts, metadata columns, and Edit / Delete actions.
  • New category: form for name, parent, image URL, and taxonomy IDs.
  • Products are assigned via the product editor's Category field, or in bulk with the spreadsheet editor.
  • Storefront: shoppers filter with a Category facet when the listing has categories.

Collections section

Named groups of products, each with a page shoppers can visit. Every collection has a type: Manual (you pick the products) or Smart (products matching rules).

  • List: shows all collections with product count, type badge, description, and metadata.
  • New collection: form for title, description, image, SEO fields, and product picker (Manual only).
  • Smart collections are supported on the storefront but cannot be created or edited in the dashboard.
  • Storefront: published collections appear at /collections/<handle>, in menus, and in sections.

Metafields section

Custom field definitions. Once you define a field, it appears on every product's editor as a card.

  • List: all defined fields, with namespace, type, flags (Pinned, Required), and actions.
  • New metafield: form for namespace, name, type (14 types: text, number, date, color, rating, etc.), validation rules, and flags.
  • Product editor: fills in values for Pinned fields shown first, then Other Fields. Required fields show a warning if empty.
  • Storefront: only Pinned metafields appear as a specification table on the product description block.

Media page

A library of all photos and videos for your shop.

  • Folders: buttons for All, General, Products, Logo, Hero, Banners, Icons (each shows a count).
  • Grid: 24 files per page; search by file name.
  • Upload: drop zone accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF (photos 20 MB max); MP4, MOV, WebM (videos 500 MB max). Photos are shrunk in your browser before upload; videos upload at full size.
  • Copy link: every photo gets a URL you can share or embed.
  • Delete: remove files (broken images show where they were used).
  • Alt text: add to library photos for search engines and screen readers (up to 200 characters).

Rules and limits

Categories

  • A product belongs to at most one category.
  • Handles (slugs) are made from the name at creation (lowercase, spaces become hyphens, other characters removed). A name written only in Bangla produces an empty handle.
  • Renaming a category does not change its handle.
  • You cannot delete a category that has products or sub-categories in it.
  • Depth is not limited.

Collections

  • A collection can have any number of products.
  • A product can be in many collections.
  • New collections are created unpublished and do not appear in your store until you publish them. The dashboard has no Publish button — publishing is not yet available in the dashboard.
  • Manual collections keep products in the order you pick them, but the storefront's default sort is alphabetical (shoppers can choose other sorts).
  • Smart collections created by converters (for example, "all blue products") exist on the storefront and in the list, but you cannot edit them in the dashboard.
  • Handles are fixed at creation; renaming a collection does not change its handle.
  • You can delete a collection at any time; products are untouched.

Metafields

  • You define a field once; then it appears on every product of the matching owner type.
  • Namespaces offered: Custom, Details, Shipping, Inventory, SEO, Social.
  • 14 field types: Single Line Text, Multi Line Text, Rich Text, Integer, Decimal, True/False, Date, Date & Time, Color, URL, JSON, Dimension, Weight, Rating.
  • Definitions for Variant, Collection, Customer, and Order can be created but values can only be stored on products.
  • You cannot delete a metafield while products have values in it.
  • Clearing a value in the product editor does not delete the stored value; you must delete the definition to clear all values.

Media

  • Image formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF.
  • Video formats: MP4, MOV, WebM.
  • Image max size: 20 MB. Video max size: 500 MB.
  • Photos 1 MB or larger (except SVG, GIF, WebP, AVIF) are shrunk in your browser: longest side capped at 4096 px, quality 80%. If the shrunk copy is smaller, it is used; otherwise the original is sent. PNG files are converted to JPEG if shrunk.
  • Videos are uploaded at full size, with a progress bar.
  • Up to 10 photos at a time in one upload.
  • Alt text: up to 200 characters per photo.
  • Library page shows 24 files at a time; search is by file name only.

Common situations

You want shoppers to filter by category. Create a category for each main type of product (Oils, Clothing, Skincare). Put each product in one. The storefront shows a Category filter on the product listing page.

You want to run a sale and group sale items together. Create a Manual collection called "Eid Sale" and pick the products. Publish it. Add a link to your store menu, or use a section to show the collection. Shoppers can see all sale items in one place.

You sell items with different materials and want to show that on the product page. Create a Material metafield (type Single Line Text). Fill it in on each product. Pin it. The storefront will show Material on the product detail page, grouped with other pinned fields.

You have 200 product photos and need to reuse some across products. Upload them to the Media library once. In the product editor, open Add photos and pick from the library. Each product gets its own copy of the photo link in its photos list.

Questions people ask

Do I need categories?

No. You can skip categories entirely. But if your products fall into natural types, categories help shoppers browse. You need at least one category for the storefront filter to appear.

Can I have many collections?

Yes. You can create as many as you want. But each collection needs to be published before shoppers see it in your store.

Where do pinned metafields show?

Only on the product detail page on your storefront, as a specification table. The product description block must have Show specifications enabled. Unpinned metafields are never shown to shoppers.

What happens to products if I delete a category or collection?

Products are untouched. If you delete a category, products in it lose their category. If you delete a collection, products are kept and appear in other collections and categories as before.

Can I reorder products in a collection?

In a Manual collection, products are saved in the order you pick them. But the storefront listing shows products in alphabetical order by default. Shoppers can choose other sorts (best-selling, newest, price). The dashboard does not offer drag-to-reorder.
