Image formats, limits and optimisation
Images are optimised in two stages: first in your browser when you upload, then when shoppers view them, so pages load fast without quality loss.
Where to find it: Media library upload; product editor photo upload
Images and videos on Omnikyo are optimised in two stages: first in your browser when you upload, then on the Cloudflare image worker when shoppers view them. The system shrinks large files and adjusts quality so pages load fast without looking bad.
Image and video formats, sizes and limits
| Type | Accepted formats | Max size | Shrinking rules | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Images | JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF | 20 MB | Files ≥ 1 MB (except SVG, GIF, WebP, AVIF): resized to max 4,096 px per side, quality 80%. PNG → JPEG if shrunk. | Upload in Media library or media picker |
| Videos | MP4, MOV, WebM | 500 MB | No compression; uploads directly | Meta Ads wizard only |
Dashboard thumbnails are optimised using Cloudflare's image worker at quality 60–90 depending on usage (thumbs are smaller and lower quality, zoom previews are higher).
Every image on your storefront is requested from Cloudflare's image worker with the width needed for the screen and quality 75. Media library files are stored once at full size and resized on the fly. Shopify-hosted images use Shopify's own resizing. Other websites' images are used as-is, not resized.
The set of allowed hosts for images in the dashboard: the image worker, Cloudflare CDN (for Shopify images), Facebook CDN (scontent), placehold.co, and your storage host. A category image URL from any other site may fail to display.
How your images are optimised
What happens when you upload an image:
- You select files.
- Omnikyo checks the format and size (must match the allowed list and be under 20 MB for images, 500 MB for videos).
- For images of 1 MB or larger (except SVG, GIF, WebP, AVIF):
- The longest side is capped at 4,096 pixels. If the image is 5000×3000, it becomes 4096×2458.
- Quality is reduced to 80% using lossy compression.
- PNG files are converted to JPEG to save space. Transparency is lost.
- The shrunk version is compared to the original. Only if it is smaller is the shrunk version uploaded.
- For SVG, GIF, WebP and AVIF: always uploaded as-is, never shrunk.
- Width and height are recorded with the file metadata.
What happens when shoppers view images:
Every image on your storefront goes through the Cloudflare image worker:
- The browser requests the image at the width it needs (e.g.
?w=400for a card on a tablet). - Quality is set to 75 by default (a good balance; full-size display previews use quality 90).
- The worker resizes and optimises on the fly, and caches the result.
- The URL includes a cache-busting version number.
This two-stage process means:
- Files are shrunk smartly: large photos are cut down, small ones are left alone.
- Shoppers always get the right size for their screen (a phone does not download a 2000-px image; a desktop does not get a tiny mobile crop).
- Formats that browsers don't support well (SVG, animated GIF) are kept as-is and handled by the browser.
- Quality is reduced by default (75) to save bandwidth, but zoom previews keep more detail (quality 90).
Exceptions:
- Shopify-hosted images (from connected Shopify stores) are resized by Shopify's own image service, not Omnikyo's.
- Images from other websites are not resized; they are used at their original size.
Allowed image types and what happens
| Format | MIME type | Behaviour | Browser support | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPEG | image/jpeg | Lossy, good compression, no transparency | All | Photos, complex images with gradients |
| PNG | image/png | Lossless, supports transparency, larger files | All | Graphics, icons, images needing transparency |
| WebP | image/webp | Modern, lossy + lossless, smaller than JPEG, transparency | Most modern browsers | High-quality photos and graphics (modern sites) |
| GIF | image/gif | Animation, 256 colors, transparency | All | Animated clips, simple animations |
| SVG | image/svg+xml | Vector, scalable, text-based, small | All modern | Logos, icons, line drawings, scalable graphics |
| AVIF | image/avif | Modern, best compression, excellent quality | Modern browsers only | Very high-quality photos and graphics (newest browsers) |
PNG files over 1 MB are converted to JPEG during upload. If you are uploading a PNG with transparency (like a logo), keep it under 1 MB to preserve the transparency. Logos over 1 MB lose their transparent background.
Compression and quality settings
| Stage | Quality | Threshold | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser upload | 80% | ≥ 1 MB | Applies only to files 1 MB or larger (except SVG, GIF, WebP, AVIF). Longest dimension capped at 4,096 px. PNG → JPEG. |
| Storefront delivery | 75% (default) | Always | Quality 75 for most images. Zoom preview: 90. Thumbnail: 60. |
The dashboard image component also has preset sizes (thumbnails 150×150, cards 400×400, main display 800, large 1200, zoom 2048).

Questions about formats and size
My PNG logo has a transparent background — why did it turn solid?
PNG files over 1 MB are converted to JPEG during upload to save space. JPEG does not support transparency, so the transparent background becomes solid. Keep logos under 1 MB or use another format (WebP, SVG, GIF).
Can I upload a video to the Media library?
The Media page upload panel accepts only images. Videos can be uploaded only in the Meta Ads creative wizard (MP4, MOV, WebM, max 500 MB). Videos uploaded there do not appear on the Media page grid correctly (it tries to display them as images).
Does Omnikyo support AVIF and WebP on the storefront?
Yes. AVIF and WebP files are uploaded as-is (never shrunk) and work in all modern browsers. Older browsers that don't support these formats fall back to a JPEG or PNG link the section provides.
What happens if I share an image link and then delete it?
The link breaks. Any page still pointing to the URL shows a broken image. Omnikyo does not check or update pages that used the image.
Are external (non-Omnikyo) images resized?
No. If you paste a URL from another website (like Shopify, a supplier, or a CDN) as a product image or collection image, it is used at its original size. Only Omnikyo images go through the image worker.
