Organise products

Products can be sorted into categories, tagged for filtering, and marked with a type and vendor so you find and analyse them later.

Where to find it: Open a product → scroll to the Organisation card on the right (desktop) or near the bottom (phone)

Add a product to a category

Click Category and choose a name. If a category has sub-categories they appear indented with a "↳" prefix. Choose No category to remove the product from all categories. Categories must exist in your Catalog before you can assign them here. If Category is disabled with a hint "Create categories under Catalog", go to Catalog and add your first category, then return.

Set product type

Product type is a text field — type any name and it will be saved. Suggestions appear as you type, drawn from product types you have used before across your whole store. You can ignore the suggestions and type something new. Leave it empty to keep the product untyped.

Set vendor

Vendor is a text field — type any name and it will be saved. Like product type, suggestions come from vendors you have already used. You can also leave it empty.

Add and manage tags

Click in the Tags field and type a tag name, then press Enter, comma, or click outside the field to add it. To add multiple tags, press Enter or comma after each one. Tags are deduplicated as you type — if you add the same tag twice, it appears only once.

Suggestions appear in chips under the input as you type. The top suggestions come from tags you have already used on other products. Pressing Backspace when the input is empty removes the last tag.

Remove a tag

Press the × on a tag chip to delete it.

What tags and type are for

Tags are used in three places: they appear as a filter on the All products list, they can drive smart collections (rules-based groupings), and they help you categorise inventory on the Inventory page. You can add up to 8 tags per product. On the all products list, if you choose multiple tags in the filter, a product must carry every tag you picked to show up — they are AND'd together, not OR'd.

Product type is informational — it filters the products list and is shown in the details modal, but it does not drive any automation or rules.

Vendor works the same way as product type.

Collections are different

Collections are managed in Catalog, not here. Collections are hand-picked groupings or smart-collection rules based on conditions. You cannot assign collections inside the product editor — collections show as a read-only column in the bulk editor only, and you manage them in Catalog.

Questions people ask

Can I change a product type or vendor later?

Yes. The field is always editable.

What happens if I delete a category after assigning products to it?

Products keep their category assignment until you manually remove it, but the category name will no longer appear in filters or the list. If you recreate the category with the same name, products are linked again.

Do tags affect my storefront?

Tags drive smart collections and are shown as a filter option in your storefront if you enable them. Otherwise, they are internal-only.
